Resident Evil: The Mercenaries - review
A portion of a Nintendo Life review...
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D entertains with its brand of fast-flowing action, constant stream of unlockables and captivating co-op gameplay. It’s far from a perfect package though, with occasionally rough visuals and a save system that is destined to ensure that second-hand copies are, to some, practically worthless. It’s also worth noting that unless you’re keen on repeatedly playing levels to boost your overall rating, you may tire of the game quite swiftly.

Interpret - Nintendo put cart before the horse with 3DS
The following information comes from an Interpret Q1 2011 3D Entertainment report...
- "Nintendo has yet to capitalize on the earlier anticipation for its 3DS handheld gaming device."
- interest in 3DS fell 27% from one year ago
- "The lack of sales for the 3DS does not reflect the overall interest in 3D gaming. Instead, it illustrates that Nintendo put the cart before the horse; that is, they released the hardware without the necessary software to engender robust sales. Our data shows that gamers want the Nintendo franchise games – Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, etc – but without them, the 3DS will continue to flounder."

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries - review
A portion of a Joystiq review...
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D contains a (very brief) demo for the franchise's next full-length entry, Resident Evil: Revelations. Ultimately, though, that's an unnecessary addendum: The game itself is a demonstration. It could have been an addictive mission-based multiplayer title perfect for a portable platform, but with its limited content and quickly tiresome combat, Mercenaries 3D is little more than a fully-priced proof of concept.

Iwata Asks: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - Development Staff feature
- Grezzo was called to Nintendo's headquarters to secretly discuss the 3DS as well as the idea of remaking The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Grezzo was worried that remaking the game without the original dev team involved would be a mistake
- Grezzo was originally very impressed with the 3D effect of the 3DS, with one staffer saying that it made him feel like he was a kid again
- when updating the game, Grezzo ran into a problem with the new character model for Link. They found that rolling on the ground with a lit stick no longer set the spiderweb on fire. This had something to do with the distance and angle of the stick to the web itself. This problem had to be fixed.
- Nintendo's Nagako Ikuta is a walking Zelda encyclopedia, so much so that Aonuma constantly talked to her while reworking the Ocarina of Time experience
- Grezzo found it very important to share the same sense of values that the original dev team had while remaking this title
- the dev teams struggled to find a connection between what details of the game should be changed/updated
- some of the dev team wanted to retain the bugs of the original game, because that was a part of the original experience
- the dev team ended up leaving many of the original bugs in, but this time they were designed as features
- Z-Targeting had to be manipulated to work with the 3D visuals
- The team had a lot of trouble working with the increased framerate and implementing it correctly
- collision detection was also a tough area to develop, since this time around collision detection is 30 times in 1 second
- Aonuma's main purpose for remaking Ocarina of Time was to fix the water temple
- the touch screen became the main method of making that experience easier
- Grezzo made a touch screen testing team soon after development started
- the team quickly came up with the idea of touch buttons in the 4 corners of the screen
- Grezzo felt the dev schedule for the game was impossible, but they kept pushing right up to the end
- Grezzo wasn't under strict instructions from Nintendo, and instead, Grezzo would come to Nintendo with ideas for the remake
- Grezzo feels that Ocarina of Time was really representative of what 3D polygon games could do at the time. It was creating rules because there were no rules for that type of game
- when making the original, Nintendo would envision what it would look like to Link if he were standing in a location instead of just making a map
- the devs used to leave comments for each other in the source program that would discuss the msot recent game delay, their employee bonuses and more
- Aonuma gave the call to use the gyro-sensor for camera movement about one week before Nintendo's 2010 conference
- two weeks before the final ROM, Miyamoto said he wanted to have the gyro-sensor change the line of sight at normal times when Link is just moving around
- It turns out that both Aonuma and Miyamoto wanted this, but Miyamoto requested it for Aonuma. They were working together!
- the help function was included for those that were playing the original but never completed it
- Navi's 'take a break' message is implemented to pop up every 60 minutes
- the team also battled about making the default option for saving 'save' instead of always defaulting to 'don't save'
- the Mario Club members that tested the game this time around never played the original, and they got stuck in all sorts of surprising places
- hint movies were edited over and over again
- the Mario Club loved that Link took double damage in the Master Quest
- Iwata thinks its been awhile since Nintendo has released something as difficult as the Master Quest
- Aonuma says that more recent Zelda games have been easier, but Miyamoto says that games don't stick with you if you don't struggle or get stuck
- Grezzo was very interested to hear Miyamoto's input during development
- they found that Miyamoto has a very unique way of looking at things
- the original Ocarina of Time source code still has developer notes left in during development

AQ Interactive hopes Cubic Ninja fans 'groove out' to the gameplay, thinks NA is more into moving while playing
A portion of a WiiLoveIt interview with AQ Interactive's Ken Awata...
WLI: What sort of potential do you think this title carries in comparison to other 3DS titles, and how do you predict Western audiences will respond to this new IP?
KA: Of all the new features of the 3DS, we focused on its motion controls for Cubic Ninja. We want to show players that the 3DS is capable of other cool stuff, besides its 3D visuals! I suspect that Western players like moving their bodies more than Japanese players do, so I hope they fully enjoy "grooving out" to the gameplay. And I think the sharp, cute design of our little ninja protagonist will appeal to the perceptive tastes of players in the West (and especially in the UK).

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries/Revelations producer comments making the Resident Evil experience portable
The following information comes from producer, Masachika Kawata...
“This time might have been an unusual example, but since we were making two games at once, we divided it up, taking care of the final action bits in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and making graphics and other aspects of presentation in Resident Evil: Revelations. The plan for Resident Evil: Revelations was moving along first, but we were putting a lot of work into the scenario and other aspects of the game, so it was going to take a long time to complete. However, we wanted to release something soon after the Nintendo 3DS system hit the market, so we started making and testing Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D — the game system of which was already pretty much in place.”
- Resident Evil: Revelations is being treated as a console game
- will contain certain elements specific to portable gaming
“Since we were making Resident Evil for a handheld, we were careful about adding elements specific to handheld gaming. It’s hard to talk about anything we haven’t disclosed yet, though. Some who have played the series on a home console may be worried. But I think you can experience the horror and enjoyment in a way unique to handheld.”

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - more details on Japanese launch sales
- 164,110 copies sold in its first week
- Media-Create claims this equals 90.02% of all copies of the game
Remember, that was the first week sales numbers. By this time I'm sure 100% of those copies have now been sold to consumers. Looks like Nintendo got the numbers right this time around. Still, I just don't get why Japan isn't into the Zelda series. Where did Nintendo go wrong with Zelda in the eyes of Japanese gamers?

Face Kart Photo Finish 3DS first screenshots
These are the first screenshots released for Face Kart: Photo Finish on the Nintendo 3DS, a game that allows your to snap a photo of your face to slap on the head of your in-game avatar.
These stills show off a variety of the game's tracks and track design, from sandy beaches and deserts, to forest and snowy locations, it's got all the expected boxes ticked.
Also looks like your face will pop up to disturb the view of opponents in multiplayer, a la the ink-splattering enemy in Mario Kart.
Face Kart: Photo Finish will be released this September.
Pet Zombies 3DS first screenshots
Pet Zombies was announced by Majesco back in January, at the same time as Face Kart: Photo Finish, but only now do we have the first screenshots.
Pet Zombies 3DS lets players raise their very own undead being, with gamers in charge of the decaying human's diet (brains and the like), and bodily maintenance (or not, as the case may be). Majesco promises oodles of customisation options, and accelerometer-controlled mini-games such as rolling zombie heads through mazes, which reward points to be spent in the Zombie Pet Shop.

Tales of producer doesn't consider the series an RPG, likes flawed characters, believes character growth to be very important
The following information comes from an Iwata Asks feature with the producer of Tales of the Abyss, Makoto Yoshizumi...
- Yoshizumi says it's always important to know your fans
- Yoshizumi would often vidist game stores to note what what the people wanted, what they bought, what they would like, and what kind of people they were
- when the original Tales of launched, it managed to sell fairly well against a Dragon Quest launch
- it is important to make the games in the series special, which is why the first game had voicework and songs
- Yoshizumi thinks the characters in Tales games are very special
- players should be able to empathize with everyone in games — even the enemies
- villains aren’t pure evil, says Yoshizumi
- villains are just fighting for what they believe in
- Yoshizumi says the series isn’t about role-playing and doesn't consider the series to be in the RPG genre
- he believes players pick up the games to learn about the characters and to see them grow
- this is why each game is labeled an “______ RPG” genre
- Yoshizumi would like to call the games something other than RPGs, but he feels this would cause confusion
- “Everyone calls it an RPG, but it’s really not, so I’m sorry [for tricking you].”
- Tales of the Abyss is “an RPG where one learns the reason for one’s existence”
- it's also a game about discovering yourself
- Yoshizumi took a risk when making the protagonist of Abyss someone who was very selfish and annoying in the beginning
- players would see the main character change over the course of the game, eventually turning into someone likable
- Yoshizumi didn't want a storyline where “the fated protagonist had a perfect life and a perfect upbringing, and he grew up to defeat the demon king.”
- he instead wanted a story with flawed characters

Aksys looking into more 3DS titles, localizing more Arc System Works DSiWare games
A portion of a Siliconera interview with various Aksys team members...
S: What about the 3DS aside from BlazBlue? Are you working on any more titles?
A: It’s a new platform, so we’re considering other titles, but as of right now we don’t have any plans.
S: Whatever happened to that Guilty Gear spinoff DSiWare game?
A: Ah, Pro Jumper!
A2: It’s coming out soon!
A3: The gameplay is actually so deep [laughs] the programmers have been working on it for several months. You saw one of the early prototypes.
A: Mainly, we’re just waiting for an unknown company to release it.
[Pro Jumper Chimaki's Hot Spring Tour Guilty Gear Tangent?! comes out tomorrow.]
S: Are you going to localize any more of Arc System Works’ DSiWare games?
A: Umm… yea-maybe?
A2: We totally localized Othello already.
A3: Let’s just say yes.
A: Yeah, we do have another Arc System Works DSiWare title.

Manaka's Dream Event: Gal Manaka. In this event, you head out for a typical date with Manaka, but end up meeting up with a gal version of Manaka.
Rinko's Dream Event: Fighting Game Rinko. In this event, you find yourself appearing as a participant in a fighting tournament. Your rival is Rinko, playing as "Shaorin". Rinko is wearing a China Dress which often appears in fighting games.
Nene's Dream Event: Weather Girl. In this event, you're the producer of a weather program, and Nene is the weather girl. The ratings at the program are down, possibly due to the mascot character, Gero Marokun. You'll have to decide to help save the ratings by having Nene take a more risque approach to her performance, or protect her as your girlfriend. Originally, the event was to take place in the studio.

Sakurai on the long wait for Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, why it's hitting both platforms, and development burdens
The following information comes from Masahiro Sakurai...
"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus. We've got no plans whatsoever -- we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members.
Project Sora had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros. once it had finished up a game on the system and had gotten used to the hardware's feature set. With the advent of the Wii U, though, we had a choice to make. Iwata asked us if wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms.
If we went solely for the Wii U, the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race. If we made this game another extension over previous one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay we can put it. It wouldn't be a fruitful competition, but doing something completely new would be difficult for many reasons, not least of which that the gamers may not be satisfied with it. That's why we decided to think about ways to link the personal connection one has with his portable system to the gather-around-and-play aspect of console systems.
The hardest part about game development is the burdens it places upon me. With previous projects I had a game design document in place before forming a team, but with this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time. I'm trying to think about how this is going to work out, but probably I'll have to discuss it with my future development team. The future of this project really depends on the people I can get involved with it."

Japan - More reports of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D sellout
A few days back, we heard that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had sold out at Japanese retailers. Now that official sales numbers have come in, we have more outlets corroborating those reports. The biggest outlet to claim a sellout is Famitsu, stating that all copies were snatched up already. As you saw from the hardware numbers, the 3DS saw a nice boost from Link and his adventure. Is this the start of the 3DS' turnaround in Japan?

Famitsu - review score details
Tales of the Abyss (Namco Bandai, 3DS)
Score: 8, 8, 7, 8
- 60 hours clear time
- 100 hours for those who explore
- reduced load times
- touch screen adds some convenient features, for battle special moves and cooking shortcuts
- 3DS version is based off the US PS2 version
"It's always nice to play a portable RPG with all of this voice work. It's well-made and doesn't feel old, but there also hasn't been much added to it, although touch-screen skill selection on the bottom screen is nice. The story unfolds in epic fashion, and the large number of skits adds depth to the tale. However, some of the text displays are pretty small, including the status screen. The delay in changing viewpoints on the field map is also annoying."
Flower Shop Story (Nippon Columbia, DS)
Score: 7, 6, 7, 6
- 10 hours to clear
- 14 hours with everything
- game gives the feeling of being in a flower shop
- child-friendly mini games
- rough controls
GoldenEye 007
Score: 9, 9, 8, 8
"The graphics are a bit rough, but the movie-like action scenes and settings are a lot of fun to watch. While it's a remake, the story and gameplay has been remixed so it doesn't feel particularly old. The smartphone gimmick is also nice. It takes time to get used to controlling the game with the Wii remote, but it does add to the you-are-there feeling. You can also fine-tune autoaim and other aspects of the difficulty, which lets even beginners get in on the action."

Miyamoto on 3DS users playing with 3D off
"There are times when people are going to want to play in 2D anyway. I think it's fair for people to say, 'Oh yeah, for this section of the game, I'm just going to turn the 3D depth slider off.' And, in other parts of the game, they may want to turn it on. I think that's a perfectly acceptable way to play the games. On the programming side with the gyro controls, we are providing some assistance to make sure that the 3D visuals stay in focus as much as possible. There are some sections of some games where you might find it easier or more compelling to play it in 3D. For a game like Ocarina of Time, in particular, if you know a cinema scene is coming up, please, definitely pop that thumb up there and quickly slide that 3D depth slider to max. It will look great. - Shigeru Miyamoto

Koji Kondo discusses his favorite Ocarina of Time music, says Skyward Sword has 'new musical gameplay elements', a few orchestrated tracks
OSV: Which piece of music specifically from Ocarina of Time and from the Zelda franchise as a whole do you emotionally connect with the most?
Kondo: It’s very difficult to choose a single song, but I think the image of the original Legend of Zelda theme song flows strongly through the other games in the series. Also, this is a bit embarrassing, but the songs that I really think are good are the brief songs like “Hyrule Castle Courtyard,” “Mini Game,” and “Potion Shop,” because I really think they match the atmospheres of their locations.
OSV: While we’re reminiscing about your work on Ocarina of Time, would you like to take the time to share with us what we can expect from Nintendo’s next Zelda title, Skyward Sword? Are you once again responsible for the music, and if so, who will be working with you, and what tools are being use to compose the music? You mentioned at E3 last year that since the Super Mario Galaxy team got to work with a live orchestra for large portions of that score that you were hoping to do the same with Skyward Sword. Can we expect more live orchestral music for Skyward Sword?
Kondo: Our next title, Skyward Sword, also has a wide variety of impressive songs, and it has new musical gameplay elements. Hajime Wakai is in charge of the music, but I also participated in making songs. My composition tools are an electronic piano and a Mac. We use orchestras for a few different songs where we feel that doing so is appropriate.

He added: "There will be music videos. There will be 3D movie trailers. There will be Nintendo-curated content, things we believe are interesting that, candidly, we've helped finance. I am actively involved in all of that content identification. … It's going to be fun."
What sorts of video content would you like to see from Nintendo and the eShop?

Japan - 3DS' 'Spot TV' app is region locked
Let the region-locking disappointment begin! It turns out that Nintendo's new 'Spot TV' service in Japan is meant for Japanese viewers only. There is indeed region locking in place, and the eShop app lets you know that the video content is meant for those in Japan only. This most has something to do with the content being ad-supported. The eShop's other video content is not region locked.

Codemasters discusses F1 2011 3DS development status, differences from console versions
A portion of a CVG interview with chief game designer Stephen Hood...
CVG: How far along are the 3DS and Vita versions?
SH: Very advanced. I played it a few weeks ago and I was quite surprised that they've already got a lot of the tracks that we're still working on up and running, the HUD and various elements are already similar. Some times I look at that and go, 'aren't you supposed to be following what we're doing?' They're slightly ahead in some areas in comparison to us because they already had the tech from doing that 2009 F1 game.
CVG: What can you tell us about the differences between the home and handheld versions?
SH: I think the key thing is they're having to take our concepts and distil them down further. Say for example if it's competition with your teammate, or unlocking things for the cars... where as ours might be a long practice session they're trying to distil that down. So you've got the same concept of winning something for the car but a lot quicker and built around shorter races, which is completely understandable but the flavour of the games is completely the same.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack CD heads to Australia as well
While things aren't perfect, I'd have to say that the Nintendo situation in Australia seems to be much better than it was a few years back. Case in point, Aussie gamers are going to get a chance to grab the Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack as well. Same deal as in the states, which means the only way to get it is through Club Nintendo. Let's hope the Aussie code redeeming process goes smoother than it did here!

Animal Crossing details and downloadable video soon
Katsuya Eguchi, the creator of Animal Crossing has shared the following regarding the upcoming 3DS version of the game:
"To those Animal Crossing fans, I just would like them to know that there’s progress and we should be able to offer a new download movie soon. As for features and specs of the game, I can’t go into too much detail, but players will be able to arrange their furniture the way they like, and we’ll be offering new networking experiences."
Very little has been given away about Animal Crossing since its unveiling in 2010, so hopefully we'll hear more soon.

Tekken creator talks Tekken 3DS design challenges, hopes to release it this year
A portion of a GamerNode interview with Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada...
GN: Regarding Tekken 3DS, I remember last year when the 3DS was introduced, you were talking about the new technology. Do you find the 3D aspect to be a new challenge for you as a developer?
KH: One of the main challenges we had to start was the stages. The way we go about making stages for non-3D devices is quite different, and if you try to take a stage and port it to the 3DS, it may not stand out as much. Some of the structures, specifically how you design them, make them look better in 3D, and we need to pay special attention to that. Another difficulty in developing for 3D is when titles make the jump to 3D, they need twice the rendering power, so they often drop the frame rate to about half of what it is normally. We don’t want to do that with Tekken, as it’s always run at 60 frames per second, but we really want the 3D as well, so it’s something we’re working on still. Our tech demo here is running at 60 frames per second with full 3D.
GN: Now, this is just a tech demo, so the game is in the early stages. I’m assuming, then, that this won’t be out for a while like the console Tekken Tag 2, is that true?
KH: This hasn’t technically been announced, it’s not actually in the company lineup, but as the creator of the game, I’d like to have it out sometime this year.

Japan - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D out of stock at some retailers
This is exactly what Nintendo was going for in Japan. They put out a smaller initial amount of Ocarina of Time 3D in Japan in order to keep the game from hitting the bargain bin. As you know, the Zelda series isn't as big in Japan as it is here. It seems like Nintendo hit the shipment amount perfectly, because some retailers are reporting that they're out of stock. They expect another shipment in about 10 days.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - Boss Gauntlet details

Iwata Asks - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D : Part 2 (tons of details)
- the pond owner character was redone 3 different times before the version we see in the game
- characters were designed to make sure players would remember the shape first and face second, since a familiar race shape would be easy to pick out
- Aonuma was quite shocked with the Great Fairy design when he first saw it
- the Great Fairies were designed to surprise people instead of giving them what they would expect from a fairy
- boss/enemy design starts with enemy specs from Aonuma-san and then the designs and functions are considered fromthere. Then, once the specs have come together, it is moved over to Morita-san at SRD to do the animation
- Aonuma used to do enemy design sketches himself, but when Takizawa-san saw a sketch he had drawn, he said "Aonuma-san, could you please stop drawing your own sketches?"
- Iwata says that the way a StarFox Arwing moves as it flies is exactly the same programming as Volvagia's movements
- the idea for fishing came up during the development of the Water Temple's boss
- during the development of that boss, a fish was put into the final boss room pond just to see it swim around
- Link's sword animation was then translated into a fishing cast just to see how well it would work
- Morita was actually working on this fishing aspect while he was supposed to be completing the boss work, so he hid the work when Aonuma came by
- the team eventually decided to make the fishing aspect its own part of the game, even though it had nothing to do with Link's adventure
- Miyamoto suggested that players should be able to cut signs
- When Miyamoto saw the sign cutting aspect put into the game, he whispered to Haruhana, "That's cool...now that's the Legend of Zelda!"
- the development of Kakariko Village didn't have a specific blueprint, but instead came together from the team just throwing out various ideas
- apparently, this is how most Zelda games come together
- the team was happy to hear about the various game delays, because it gave them more time to polish the project
