The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - Robin/Zelda Williams' second commercial

Nintendo of Europe official PR - Robin Williams and daughter continue to share their passion for Zelda

19th July 2011 – After becoming instantly fascinated by The Legend of Zelda series after playing the original The Legend of Zelda game in 1987, award-winning actor Robin Williams decided to name his daughter Zelda after the Princess featured within the series of games. And now, more than 13 years after the original Nintendo 64 game, Robin and his daughter Zelda are getting to grips with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS.
Robin, who has an in-depth knowledge of The Legend of Zelda series, hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm for the game: “Unlike most things from the 1980s, The Legend of Zelda has held up really well. I fell in love with this series years ago, with its incredible storytelling and adventures, but enjoy it even more in 3D. Nintendo has really taken The Legend of Zelda to a whole new level that is exciting for long-time fans like myself, my daughter, and a new generation.”
For Zelda Williams, who has close ties to The Legend of Zelda since the day she was born, revisiting one of her favourite games from childhood is a very emotional experience: “Seeing my dad all excited when he’s playing is really fun. We started to play the game around the same time and we exchange tips on how to solve puzzles and we always try to play together! The game feels really fresh and new thanks to the new improved graphics!”
You can now see both Robin and Zelda experience the brand new features in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as they get to grips with motion controls and gaze at the remastered 3D graphics at www.nintendo.co.uk/zelda. Nintendo 3DS owners can also view the recently aired TV campaign featuring Robin and Zelda in full 3D for the first time on Nintendo eShop from the afternoon of Thursday 21st of July. Make sure you also check out the exclusive and intimate interview with Robin and his daughter Zelda available through Nintendo eShop – how did her name really come about and what is it about the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D which gets them both so excited?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is in shops now, only for Nintendo 3DS.

Ubisoft expresses confidence in Wii U, 3DS and Wii

The following comments come from Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot concerning the Wii U, 3DS sales and Wii sales...

- "really a huge improvement over what can be done in the console business today."
- "We must not forget that Nintendo has been the biggest seller this generation, and has a huge number of customers that appreciate the brands that are created on the Wii and will be interested to go to the next generation."

- "(Nintendo will) do what’s necessary to launch [the Wii U] in a huge way."
- "There were not many high profile games launched with the machine, but we think there will be lots launched before the end of the year, so it will continue to grow. If you remember, the DS launch didn't go very smoothly, so we have to look at [the 3DS] in the longer term than we do now. Potentially it could become a great machine."
- "Wii will still be really well performing this year. [Nintendo] already decreased the price, and we know Nintendo will make sure to perform this Christmas, so we expect the Wii will be strong this year, especially on casual products."

Team Meat man likes his 3DS

Edward McMillen of Team Meat has a new game coming out for Steam, but had a few choice words that might help boost the morale of anyone doubting the future of the 3DS. Seems Mr. McMillen is pretty keen on his little 3D system than can:

"We went with Steam because the game's a PC game and my past experiences with Steam have been amazing," he says, although "It would be cool to put it on 3DS. Not because of the 3D, but just because I want something to play on my 3DS."
"I like [the 3DS e-Shop] so far and wouldn't be against making something for it if I knew how games were selling on it. Tommy and I are devs for the system and plan on buying a kit this year but don't have any games in mind specifically for the system yet."

Super Mario 3DS - preview

A small snippet from 3DSTribe's very thorough examination of the E3 demo:

Super Mario also sees a welcome step back to the small to big to powerup Mario chain, something that’s more than just a visual touch -and more fitting of the game’s 2D Mario influence – some blocks/jumps in those games are only accessible with big Mario, for example, likewise Mario’s extended moveset on the 3D marios erase the need for big/small Mario. Current powerups are no doubt familiar – there’s nothing like Spring Mario or Boulder Mario here, at least yet, but Raccoon Mario’s floaty jump and tail whip are as welcome as they’ve always been.
It’s also worth noting that using the 2D Mario template rather than the 3D affairs of Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy’s is certainly the best way to utilise 3DS’s 3D effect (though arguably Galaxy-style levels with a 3D Mario moveset would be just as successful), as it offers more shadowless jumping gaps per level between platforms – exactly what it hard to distinguish without autostereoscopic 3D.

Heroes of Ruin's artwork comes from a comic book artist

- comic book artist Adi Granov came in to do artwork for the project

”This work was done by Adi Granov that Square [Enix] had hired to do artwork. We set up all of the initial art and internally created the character classes. All of that goes through an approval process where we send it to Square and they offer their input. One of the challenges working with the 3DS is the screen real estate. You can’t take a realistically proportioned character and convey them on the screen as well. We have a slightly stylized look to the game just because the proportions need to be exaggerated so they can be readable on the screen. That’s where we worked with Square to come up with a good look for our game” - Chris Bromby, art director at n-Space

Netflix Streaming Now Available on Nintendo 3DS Hand-Held Systems

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Starting today, Nintendo 3DS™ owners across the United States and Canada can download a free application that allows Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans to instantly watch TV episodes and movies streaming from Netflix. The attractive, easy-to-use service adds a huge value to the Nintendo 3DS portable system, and again demonstrates how Nintendo 3DS continues to present new and different experiences for owners almost every day.
Nintendo 3DS joins the Wii™ console in its ability to stream Netflix content. On an average day, more than 1.5 million Netflix members instantly watch TV shows or movies via the Wii console. Now available for download from the Nintendo eShop, the Netflix application makes it easy for people to enjoy big action films, award-winning documentaries or hit reality shows and sitcoms on the Nintendo 3DS system anytime, anywhere.
“The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country. Nintendo 3DS truly offers something for everyone.”
“Nintendo is a terrific partner with Netflix,” said Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix. “We’re excited to extend the partnership to include streaming on Nintendo 3DS.”
The new Netflix application for Nintendo 3DS displays movies and TV episodes in 2D on the system’s upper screen. Users will soon have access to an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need for special glasses.
Use of the Netflix application on Nintendo 3DS requires a broadband Internet connection and a Netflix streaming membership starting at $7.99 a month. Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans can instantly watch on their Nintendo 3DS systems and other devices, including the Wii console.
To download the free Netflix application or any other content from the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo 3DS users must first install the free system update that became available on June 6.
The Nintendo 3DS system’s parental control settings can be used to manage access to the Netflix application. Parents who wish to manage the specific content their kids watch will be happy to know that the parental control settings associated with their Netflix account will be applied to the streaming content viewable on the Nintendo 3DS system.
For more information about Nintendo 3DS and its other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/3ds.

Nintendo says Netflix bringing 3D streaming movies to 3DS

"The new Netflix application for Nintendo 3DS displays movies and TV episodes in 2D on the system's upper screen. Users will soon have access to an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need for special glasses."

That blurb comes from the Netflix 3DS press release that we posted earlier today. The wording seems a bit confusing. Is that additional library related to Netflix, or is Nintendo talking about the Nintendo Video service?

When they were pressed for an answer, Nintendo said that the additional library was indeed coming from Netflix. When Netflix was asked the same question, they wouldn't discuss.

Dream Trigger 3D - review

A portion of an ONM review...

...Dream Trigger 3D's core mechanics just aren't substantial enough or developed enough to sustain interest over time, despite attempts to mix things up with an impressive array of sights and sounds. And, given the asking price, you'll be hard pushed not to feel a little short-changed as a result.

Iwata Asks: 3DS eShop - Making shopping fun, regional content managers, rankings, VC details and more

- adding elements of the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo Channel doubled the dev team size
- one of the designers went to video game and book stores to learn about ways to display content for casual purchases

- precise searching was something people wanted early on, but that opinion changed later on as the eShop took shape

- an eShop managers' group was formed in order to share opinions and details
- the 5-star ranking system was met with a lot of debate, so much so that there were plans to use different ranking systems in different regions

- the server team in America is working on tax rates
- tax rates in America are causing a lot of trouble, due to all the different rates for zip codes
- screen speed was sped up to make the shopping experience more pleasurable
- this was done by using a database of likely content for the user
- Nintendo Video content will swap in and out on its own

- this was done because of video rights issues as well as the amount of videos that would clutter up the 3DS
- view downloaded videos without being connected to the internet

- 3D Classics: Xevious was the first title worked on
- working on the 3D adaptation brought up issues with spatial relationships in the original

- the graphics and programming were redone from scratch
- the team enhanced the graphics at one point, but Miyamoto and Iwata both said to put it back in the original style
- Tennis was worked on as a 3D Classic, but the results were underwhelming and more issues arose, so development was scrapped
- translating Game Boy games to the 3DS VC wasn't as easy as just porting
- the way things look when flashing looked completely different on the 3DS than it did the Game Boy
- eShop region manages discuss what classic games they want to see on the Game Boy VC
- when these managers choose games, the production cost and practicability are discussed
- an actual Game Boy unit was referenced many times during 3DS VC development in order to get the right feeling

LoveFilm's stance on why they rent Super Monkey Ball 3D and not Resident Evil: The Mercenaries makes no sense

"It is an issue with these two games recoding (sic) on the game storage-disc-thing how far you have got. Which means that whoever gets the disc-thing first and plays the game will then store that and the next person will see all the levels, achievements, and items and things unlocked already, which takes a lot of the enjoyment out. Because Resident Evil is a linear game this will totally spoil it, so we have opted not to rent it. Super Monkey Ball is not a linear game but a puzzle game, so it is less of a problem and therefore still available to rent." - LoveFilm statement

Dream Trigger 3D - review

A portion of a Eurogamer review...

Dream Trigger is a novel experiment that starts off refreshing, surreal and unique, but it's too content to regurgitate the same tricks and never evolves past its base mechanics. New coats of paint can only mask so much before it grows tiresome. If you're looking for the best showcase for your 3DS, keep dreaming.

There'll be no on-foot sections and nine different race types (26 stages over five acts) on your journey from San Francisco to New York.

There's also unlockable challenges, high score swapping and StreetPass races.

F1 2011 3DS details emerge

Codemasters has divulged the first details of F1 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.

The game will include challenges and a career mode, but full F1 races including practice and qualifying have been scaled back to suit a handheld experience (quick bursts of play). The site adds:

"That's not to say that it's an arcade game. This is still rooted in simulation, and the team has spent a lot of time on the AI coding, to make sure even the first corner of the game is smooth and realistic."

Nintendo Video on 3DS launches on July 13

Nintendo has announced that Nintendo Video for the 3DS will launch (in Europe at least) on July 13, and will include content such as cartoons and documentaries.

Coming soon, we're promised, are movie trailers, classic concerts, and animations for children.

Nintendo Video is freely available as a download in the Nintendo eShop and provides access to new and exclusive videos in both 2D and 3D.

I don't think it'll be long before we hear a similar announcement from Nintendo of America on when the service launches there.

Analysts comment on 3DS sales thus far, future sales, smartphone impact, gamer satisfaction and more

The following information and commentary comes from Michael Cai, vice president of Games and Technology at Interpret...

"Based on our research, we knew the 3DS curve would look more like the PSP curve early on. The industry should not base longer-term forecasts on initial sales. We knew that Nintendo was targeting a different audience with the 3DS as part of a conscious effort to go back to core gamers. A lot of the games for the device are targeting the younger male demographic. That's what many in the games industry don't understand. Many people expected Nintendo sales to repeat the DSi story and even added higher expectations."

- awareness of the Nintendo 3DS among gamers spiked from 16% in 2010 to 65% at the wake of its release
- positive purchase interest declined from 22% to 16% over the past year
- 8% of gamers report owning a Nintendo 3DS already
- 64% of those who purchased a 3DS are extremely satisfied with the device
- 34% are somewhat satisfied
- 2% were not satisfied

The following comments come from Michel Pachter...

"Nintendo launched a premium-priced device with very little software support, which the recent E3 lineup was intended to remedy. I don't think that the price is so much of an obstacle as the software lineup, but given the high price, it's hard to justify buying a 3DS instead of a regular DS. Once there is a lot of exclusive software for the 3DS (Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario Kart 3DS, etc.), I expect to see sales pick up. I don't think that 3D phones are as much of a threat as smartphones are. There will be a lot of smartphones, and they will become the de facto entry level phone in a couple of years, meaning that dedicated handheld gaming devices will see their addressable market shrink to only the hardcore."
The following comments come from Samir El Agili, Gameloft's general studio manager..

"We're really excited about 3D gaming on the mobile side. Nintendo 3DS launched and has showed gamers what's possible with 3D gaming without glasses. There are already two 3D mobile devices in the US and more are on the way."

Nintendo considering auto-download demos for 3DS, Wii U

“When Nintendo would like to ask users to try a specific new game, we should deliver it to their Nintendo 3DS, and possibly Wii U, with their prior consent and recommend that they just try it and, if they like it, they can pay for it. In this way, we need to introduce users to unknown products. Consumers are likely to be convinced to pay about 5,000 yen for a well-established franchise product, but not all the people are willing to pay a certain amount of money for an innovative but unknown product. Now is the time to prepare for these situations.” - Satoru Iwata

Nintendo on 3DS vs. Smartphones - We want to deliver content on 3DS that you can't do on iPhone

The following comments come from Satoru Iwata...

Recently, many people who have been purchasing new mobile phones seem to choose smartphones over conventional mobile phones. This is a stream which mainly Apple's iPhone created, and as a user myself, I of course understand what can be done on smartphones. I think that the reason why smartphones are highly appreciated is because they made it possible to do many things in the palm of our hands which could not be done without PCs in the past. On the other hand, if the Nintendo 3DS tries to compete with what smartphones can do or what smartphones are good at, Nintendo will have to compete head-on with the number of smartphones created and the numbers of the developers who are working on smartphones. Nintendo is not a company which has yielded results so far by directly competing with other companies in that way. On the contrary, we have made some achievements by finding new points which most people did not really pay attention to and showed that by changing only one condition, the value for consumers can change drastically, or by finding valuable things which only Nintendo can do, and by so many people all over the world accepting these ideas.

If we try to tackle every ten functions a smartphone has, our power will be split, we will be in a difficult situation in each aspect, and as a result, we might be on the back foot without pleasantly surprising our consumers. Therefore, we have to think about how we can make consumers feel that, even if they have smartphones, they still want to carry around the Nintendo 3DS with them. So, it is theoretically correct that, for example, if you added a GPS function to the Nintendo 3DS, you could create a 3D car navigation system with the Nintendo 3DS, but rather than putting effort on creating such things, we have to develop things which are "only enjoyable on the Nintendo 3DS," things that can not be achieved on iPhone or other smartphones, and offer them. And, by the time smartphone applications take a part of the idea from, refer to or imitate such things, Nintendo will have had to have already proposed the next thing. A bright future can not be realized if things do not work in this way. I would like to strive to propose products or software which make even iPhone or other smartphone users feel that the Nintendo 3DS is worth carrying around with them.

Nintendo - Connecting 3DS to Wii/Wii U blocks internet connectivity, 3DS connecting to Wii U

The following comments come from Satoru Iwata...

First, I would like to answer from the perspective of whether it is technically possible or not. I will say that it is technically possible. However, there are some limitations: While the Nintendo 3DS is communicating with the Wii or the Wii U, the Wii or the Wii U will not be able to access the Internet, and this technical restriction will remain unless we add some special hardware.

Also, as a second point, of course if we decide that using the Nintendo 3DS as a controller for the Wii U is the most obvious choice, we will do so without hesitation but, on the other hand, if software from Nintendo for the Wii or the Wii U system could not be enjoyed without the Nintendo 3DS, some consumers might feel that Nintendo is saying that consumers must buy both systems. So that consumers will not think of Nintendo as a company that made the Nintendo 3DS a controller because it wanted consumers to buy both hardware systems, we will not adopt this idea unless connecting the two systems is the most natural thing to do. As for connecting multiple gaming devices, we actually did this in the Nintendo GameCube era. We connected the Nintendo GameCube and the Game Boy Advance and called it "Connectivity." Over a period of more than ten years, Nintendo has proposed similar entertainment features several times, and we received a certain level of response, but we feel that something like this that has a high threshold will not really spread among consumers. At that time, there were other problems, like a cable sold separately was necessary to do this, so we would like to think of it as a possibility now that the communication can be done wirelessly, but even if we should do this, we would like to develop this service so that we will not receive comments from consumers saying, "Why does Nintendo force us to buy both systems?"

Famitsu - review score details

- Star Fox 64 3D (9/8/8/9, 34 points): "Being able to carry around Star Fox 64 with you is great. The 3D visuals are effective, and the gyro controls work a lot better than I was expecting. The slide-pad control is easier to use, but with gyro control you get more a realistic feeling of flight, letting you make precision movement easily."

- Puyo Puyo! (8/8/8/8, 32 points): "There's a ton of variety to the rules, some of which make it easy even for beginners to compete, so multiplayer is a lot of fun. There's nothing fresh here, but it's still a good package. The new rules and characters make this a pretty cool package. The gameplay system, which allows both beginners and advanced players to play on an even keel, deserves special notice."

Shinobi 3DS 'bridges gap between classic and new'

Griptonite Games has been talking up Shinobi on the Nintendo 3DS, and explained to NowGamer why it chose to bring the series to the Nintendo 3DS rather than a home console.

"From a Sega perspective, there were several reasons why this project ended up on a handheld versus one of the home consoles. Mainly, though, it just seemed like the 3DS was a better fit for what all of us were trying to accomplish for the project.

By being able to take what was great about the previous Shinobi titles and then “modernizing” them with all the new features that the 3DS is capable of, we were able to end up with a title that bridges the gap between the classic and the new.

Now, for the first time, players can enjoy that timeless gameplay, but with the bonus of gyroscope and touch screen support, as well as experience a unique art style that’s only enhanced further by the stereoscopic abilities of the system.

The addition of Street Pass provides an incentive for players to go out and meet each other, which we hope will help to build up that dedicated Shinobi community of fans even further and in a way that wasn’t possible before. Lastly, though, it’s been many years since a Shinobi title has been released on a handheld and we felt that now was the time to do it."

Capcom - We've learned from Resident Evil: The Mercenaries' save situation, won't happen again

Capcom may like to be in the front of gaming headlines, but they don't want the headache that comes with negative stories. Lately Capcom's been getting bashed about their decision to block gamers from deleting their save files in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries. When asked about the situation and subsequent bashing Capcom has been receiving, Capcom's Christian Svensson said that he believes the company won't make that same mistake again.

Super Mario 3DS to feature more familiar power-up suits than just Tanooki

The following comment comes from Super Mario director Yoshiaki Koizumi...

"I can't reveal the actual number of power-ups in the game right now, but suffice to say that we do try to include enough so that people can enjoy a variety of different kinds of play experiences in the title. Also, I should point out that we don't necessarily decide on what number of famous Mario suits will appear in the game and proceed from there - we try to find interesting gameplay ideas and then try to settle on what to do in different places. I can say that we will definitely have some more familiar suits than just the Tanooki Suit."

Inchworm Animation 3D under consideration

"People are asking a lot about a 3DS version, and I would love to do a 3DS native version. Last summer, in order to get practical and get this thing out there, I had to strip out a bunch of ambitious stuff that was working, like keyframing, a scrolling timeline, sound-effects and audio recording.

Obviously it would be nice to restore those and the wireless features if possible. So we'll see, if I find the time and energy to continue with it I would love to have an Inchworm 3D out there." - Bob Sabiston, creator of Inchworm Animation

Tales of the Abyss translations for Europe not determined, sales expectations and more Tales on 3DS

Makoto Yoshizumi had a ton to say about Tales of the Abyss' localization in Europe, and there's some news that Europeans may not be happy to hear. As of right now, the translations aren't set in stone, so languages like French might not actually see a full translation. Obviously English is doing to happen, but some other locations in Europe may be in trouble.

Mr. Yoshizumi also stated that the team hopes to hit 250,000 in sales. This might help to pursue the team's second desire, which is bringing more Tales games to 3DS.
